Norilsk Nickel receives 494 mln rbl claim from Krasnoyarsk Region
MOSCOW, Feb 11 (PRIME) -- Russian metals giant Norilsk Nickel has received a claim from the Krasnoyarsk Region to redeem 494 million rubles of damage inflicted on wildlife resources by the Norilsk fuel spill, the company said in a statement on Thursday.
“The ministry of environment and rational natural resource management of the Krasnoyarsk Region sent a claim to NTEK (Norilsk-Taimyr Energy Company, a unit of Norilsk Nickel) on voluntary compensation of damage inflicted by the fuel spill … in the amount of 494 million rubles,” the statement read.
“The government of the Krasnoyarsk Region suggested that the company compensate the damage 30 days after receiving the claim or takes measures to restore the wildlife in the framework of the damage inflicted on wildlife resources.”
A fuel tank at the premises of NTEK lost pressure on May 29, 2020, and leaked out 21,000 tonnes of fuel and lubricants into the river Ambarnaya, causing fire. On February 5, 2021, the Arbitration Court of the Krasnoyarsk Region almost completely satisfied the suit of the Federal Service for Natural Resources Oversight against Norilsk Nickel, obliging the company to pay 146.2 billion rubles for the fuel spill.
